Medway's residents were encouraged to think pink during this month's Recycle Now Week.
The council's Waste Minimisation Team visited Medway's high street and shopping centres from Monday, 21 to Friday, 25 June to offer residents advice about recycling. They provided information and answered questions on how everyone can do their bit to help the planet, from recycling, composting and reducing their household waste.
On Friday, 25 June, the team headed to Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre, from 9am to 7pm. A Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) amnesty was set up in the yellow car park by Argos, where people could deposit any waste electrical item they wanted to recycle. For more info on this event, please visit www.medway.gov.uk/weee.
The focus for this year's campaign is to encourage everyone to recycle their old small electrical items like irons, toasters, kettles, remote controls, DVD players, cameras and radios.
Residents can deposit their old or broken small WEEE in pink Tardis-style collection bins at locations across Medway, as well as the household recycling sites. Since March, residents have deposited nearly 1.5 tonnes of small WEEE items; that's the equivalent of 1,071 kettles that have been recycled instead of being sent to landfill.
The scheme is being run in conjunction with Sittingbourne-based recycling company SWEEEP - Specialist Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Processor and Veolia Environmental Services.
