Hempstead Valley 30 years in fashion
Thursday 23rd to Saturday 25th October

It is 30 years this year since Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre, Gillingham, opened and the Medway Messenger wants to hear from our customers about their memories of the centre over the last three decades.

Is it your birthday on the same day as the anniversary- October 17, or were you born on October 17th 1978? Maybe you've got some photographs of events held here. Did you meet any of the celebrities who have visited to celebrate the centre's other milestone birthdays or store openings? Philip Schofield was let out of the 'Broom Cupboard' in 1987 and Bill Roache from Coronation Street opened the Granada store back in 1983.

Do you have a photograph of the area before the centre was built there?

Selected memories will be published in a supplement in the Medway Messenger and selected photographs and old press cuttings will go on display at the centre. On display will be a selection of original 1970's clothing, toys and other memorabilia from that time. Many of our staff will be dressing up in 70's fashion and there will be music from that era too, which should bring even more memories flooding back!

Hempstead Valley has for 30 years been a key part of the community of Medway and north Kent and continues to pride itself on providing first class customer service and retail excellence in a safe and clean environment. To help us celebrate our milestone birthday and as a thank you to our loyal customers will be holding a range of free events in the centre from 23rd to 25th October.

Should you wish to contribute your memories, photos or memorabilia please contact either Sarah Hills at the Medway Messenger on 01634 227836 or email shills@thekmgroup.co.uk or email Su Button, Hempstead Valley's Marketing Executive on s.button@hempsteadvalley.co.uk.

Hempstead Valley Farmers' Market - Sunday 14th September.

The next Hempstead Valley Farmers' Market will be held outside in green car park from 10am to 2pm. This event will then be held on the second Sunday of every month.

"Customers will be spoilt for choice being offered multiple branded retailers inside the centre, including the only M&S in Medway with a food hall and the largest Sainsbury’s in Kent together with some outdoor shopping within a traditional farmers’ market street scene, offering good wholesome Kentish produce.

Mark Rumfitt, Centre Manager said, “The Hempstead Valley Farmers’ Market has been successfully running for 2 years and we have had very positive feedback from our local producers and our customers, who especially like the variety of high quality local produce on sale. The market has enhanced our current food offer in bringing a unique range of good quality local produce from local farms. A key aspect of the market, are the controls in place that ensure that the majority of the produce is from Kent, thus supporting local farmers. We are a member of Produced in Kent and are working with them to help raise the profile of everything produced in the Garden of England”

Local stallholders include: MB Farms (farmed meats) - Stockbury, Jo's Cakes (cakes) - Rochester, Hursell (farmed pork) – Upchurch, Whitegates Farm (vegetables) – Rainham, R&D Payne (plants) – Hartlip, Fruberry Foods (preserves) - Chatham, The Gingerbread Man (gingerbread) – Rochester and That's Nice (beers, preserves, juices) – Hempstead.

M. Farmers Markets (who also run Meopham and Dartford Farmers’ Markets) have taken over the organisation of the Hempstead Valley Farmers’ Market. Please contact them on 07775 736116 if you are interested in having a stall.
